25 Memorable Moments from the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2010-2011 Season
#8: Shootouts!
The Penguins were 10-3 overall in shootouts in 2010-2011, and the most memorable of them was in March where four games in a row went to the shootout.
The first two games were on the road. First came Detroit, a rivalry that has grown immensely throughout the years (3 guesses why). Newcomer James Neal scored the lone goal in the shootout to seal the first win. Next came another huge rival, the Flyers. Chris Kunitz was the hero in that game.
At home, the Devils played an exciting 0-0 game, but James Neal came to the rescue again at the end of the shootout. Finally, Alex Kovalev and, of course, James Neal ended the shootout streak with a bang, sealing a win against the Panthers.
And of course, let’s not forget Marc-Andre Fleury, a key part of all of the wins because of the opposing shots he saved!
The Penguins would play, and win, their last shootout game against the Islanders at the end of the season, but the “shootout streak” would not be forgotten. Even though many people debate whether or not the NHL should keep the shootout, Penguins fans know that they can be a really exciting way to finish a game…we’ve seen it many times!
Source: letsgopensTampa Bay Lightning forward Steve Downie and Pittsburgh Penguins forward Chris Kunitz were each handed one-game suspensions by the NHL on Tuesday after separate incidents that took place during Game 3 of their series on Monday night.
Downie got the single-game ban for leaving his feet during a check on Pittsburgh forward Ben Lovejoy at the end boards. Prior to the hit, Lovejoy was able to advance the puck down the ice leading to an early goal for Pittsburgh. The goal negated the penalty Downie was set to receive.
Kunitz was suspended for his elbow on Tampa Bay forward Simon Gagne, which sent the Lightning player to the ice in front of the Penguins net.
Pittsburgh leads the series 2-1, and both players will miss Game 4 on Wednesday night. Downie and Kunitz are eligible to return for Game 5 on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
